Luther Sweeps Carleton in Season Opener

Luther pounded out 26 hits en route to a double header sweep of Carleton College in the Minneapolis Metrodome late last night. This season opening twin bill began at 11:15 p.m. and finished at 3:30 a.m.
In game one, the Norse scored nine runs on nine hits, defeating the Knights 9-2. Nate Neis, who returned to the starting line-up after missing all of last year finishing his requirements at Mayo Clinic towards his nursing major, was 3-for-3 with an rbi. Chris Reynolds produced two rbi thanks to a 2-for-4 performance in the lead-off slot. Mark Weber also drove in two runs as the designated hitter and matched Neis for runs scored.
Two-time all-Iowa Conference pitcher Adam Kohls picked up his 17th career victory. Kohls pitched four innings, walked two, struck out three and gave up three hits. He was followed by Jeff Riddle who allowed two runs on three hits and struck out five.
Game two saw the Norse explode for 12 runs on 17 hits while holding the Knights scoreless. Ben Schott had a huge game, going 3-for-4 at the plate that included a solo home run over the left field fence in the sixth inning. Weber also continued to swing a hot bat driving in two runs while also going 3-for-4 at the plate. Multiple hits were also recorded by Reynolds, Neis, Zach Topping and Steve Beckman.
Nate Todd recorded his 15th career victory allowing just two hits in four innings of work on the mound. He also struck out six of the 15 batters he faced and walked one.
Luther will return to action when it will take its annual spring trip to Phoenix, Ariz., March 20-25. The Norse are scheduled to play 10 games in six days at the Russ Matt Invitational.
Luther begins Iowa Conference action on Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at Cornell College. The Norse and Rams will play a nine inning game on the 27th and a seven inning double header on the 28th.
Luther's home opener will be on March 31, when it will host Central College. This double header will begin at 1:00 p.m.
