Norse cruise to 16-1 victory over spartans
May 1, 2009
Luther pounded out 14 hits and defeated the University of Dubuque 16-1 in seven innings this afternoon here in Decorah. This game was originally scheduled to be a nine inning contest.
Nate Todd (6-3) lowered his ERA to 2.80 allowing one run on four hits en route to the complete game win.
Zack Topping had a huge afternoon driving in four runs with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Nate Neis was credited with three rbi, while Steve Beckman and Ben Schott both tallied two. Seven different players crossed the plate twice.
Luther blew this game open with a six-hit, eight run third, that saw the Norse bat around the order. Luther also tallied five runs on five hits in the fifth.
The win keeps Luther's hopes alive for at least a share of the Iowa Conference championship. The Norse will need to sweep the Spartans tomorrow and Cornell needs to defeat Loras at least once this weekend in that three-game series in Mount Vernon. The Norse are now 13-7 in league play, 25-11 overall. Dubuque falls to 2-18 in the IIAC, 8-2 overall.
Tomorrow's double header that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
