Luther one win away from making national tournament field

Following today's 9-2 victory over Wartburg College in game seven of the Iowa Conference double elimination tournament, Luther is one win away from securing the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III National Tournament.

Luther, the regular season co-champions and #2 seed of the tournament, scored nine runs on 10 hits, posting multiple runs in the first, second and fifth innings. Wartburg, the #4 seed, advanced to today's game by defeating #1 seed Loras College by a score of 10-9 yesterday.

Cody Hyland (7-0) stayed perfect for the season pitching eight complete innings. Hyland allowed two runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out four. Max Flaig pitched the final frame and retired all three of the Knights batters he faced.

Alex Thomas, who was 2-for-3 batting ninth, hit a two-run home run over the left field fence in the second inning. Chris Reynolds also drove in a run with a single to right field.

The Norse blew the game open scoring four runs on four hits in the fifth. Mark Weber, who was 3-for-4, drove in his second run of the game. Four batters later, Thomas drove in the final two of his four rbi's, with a two-run single up the middle.

The win gives Luther an overall record of 29-11. The Norse will play tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. and will have to wait two games to see who they will face.
