Luther splits with loras - drops series 1-2 and falls to fourth place

Luther fell to fourth place in the Iowa Conference standings after losing the three-game series this weekend with Loras College in Dubuque. The Norse and Duhawks split this afternoon, with the Norse winning game one 8-5 and then dropping a 12-1 decision in the nightcap. Last night, the Duhawks defeated the Norse 4-0.

Luther pounded out 10 hits in game one scoring multiple runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Chris Reynolds, Mark Weber, Joe Thompson and Alex Thomas all drove in two runs. Weber and Thomas were both 2-for-4, while Thompson was 3-for-4.

Cody Hyland (5-0) remained unbeaten on the mound. Hyland pitched six innings, allowed three earned runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out two. Jeff Riddle pitched the final inning and held the Duhawks in check en route to the save.

The Duhawks tallied 12 runs on 14 hits off four Luther pitchers in game two. The Norse scored their only run in the top of the first when Weber hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Zack Topping was the only Luther batter to record multiple hits going 2-for-4.

The split this afternoon gives the Norse an Iowa Conference record of 8-5, 18-9 overall. Loras is now 7-6 in league play, 17-11 overall.

The Norse are scheduled to play non-conference opponent Martin Luther College tomorrow at home at 2:00 p.m. Next Tuesday, the Norse travel to Buena Vista University for a twin bill that begins at 3:30 p.m.
