Luther drops two at wartburg - series continues tomorrow
April 3, 2009
Luther dropped the first two games of the three-game series with Wartburg this evening in Waverly. The Knights defeated the Norse 3-1 and 3-0. The third and final game will begin at noon tomorrow.
In game one, Wartburg ace Jerrold Martijn held the Norse to just two hits, both that came in the sixth inning. Zach Topping drove in the lone Norse run in this frame, a single to left field, that scored Nate Neis who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Chris Reynolds moved Neis to third with a single up the middle.
Wartburg scored two in the second and one in the sixth off Norse starter Nate Todd. Todd went the distance allowing six hits, three walks and only one earned run.
In game two, the Norse tallied six hits, but were never able to string enough hits together to score a run. The Knights scored one in the third and two in the sixth en route to the nightcap victory. Neis, Jake Waddle, Topping, Reynolds, Steve Beckman and Alex Thomas were all credited with a hit.
The two losses drops Luther's Iowa Conference record to 3-2, 11-6 overall. Wartburg moves to 4-4 in the IIAC, 12-11 overall.
