Benny Boyd and Josh Patterson

Two members of the Luther College football team were presented Certificates of Appreciation from the Black Alumni Association during the 2009 Homecoming festivities held Oct. 3.

Josh Patterson, a starting defensive back who was named honorable mention all-conference for the Norse last season, was presented a certificate for Outstanding Service as a current student. Earlier this year, Patterson was one of two Luther student-athletes that was selected to attend the 2009 NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Leadership Conference held May 24-27 in Orlando, Fla.

The conference was designed to provide student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their own campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Benny Boyd, Luther's Co-Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams Administrator, was presented a certificate for Distinguished Service as an African American Faculty/Staff member.

Boyd has been a member of the Luther College football team's coaching staff for the past eight years. A 2000 graduate of Aurora University, Boyd also serves as an instructor in the health and physical education department.

Boyd was selected to participate in the 2009 NCAA Football Coaches Academy, a three-day conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana May 24-27. He was chosen from a select group of football coaches from all divisions of the NCAA.
