Taylor Nelson Qualifies for NCAA III National Swimming & Diving Championships

Taylor Nelson, a 2006 graduate of Decorah High School, has qualified for the NCAA III National Swimming and Diving Championships. Macalester College will host the national championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center March 18-21. Nelson is the only Luther swimmer who was invited to the national meet.
Nelson, who will be making his second consecutive appearance at the national championships, qualified in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.65. Twenty-four competitors qualified for this event. He will also swim the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle as bonus events.
The top-eight qualifiers after the preliminary round will race for the 2009 individual championship and earn All-America honors. The next eight fastest competitors will swim in the B-finals and earn honorable mention All-America honors.
Nelson, who was a three-time honorable mention All-American last year as a member of the 200 and 400 medley relays as well as the 200 freestyle relay, will swim the 50 freestyle on Wednesday, March 18. The prelims for the 200 freestyle will take place on Thursday, March 19 and the prelims for the 100 freestyle will be held Saturday, March 21.
“I am excited for Taylor and the opportunity he has to represent Luther swimming and diving at the national championships,” stated Head Coach Lance Huber. “This year’s qualifying times are the fastest in history and it is quite an honor to be in the field.”
Nelson is the son of Cy and Ramona Nelson of Decorah, Iowa.
