McKay Breaks School Record in 3,000 Meter Run

David McKay broke an eight year old school record in the 3,000 meter run at the Meet of Hearts Invitational hosted by Carleton College, Feb. 14. McKay, a two-time All-American in cross country, placed first from the field of 21 runners, with a time of 8:35.94. Stacy Sundet held the record of 8:36.81 set in 2001.

Josh Blessing, a senior pole vaulter, joined McKay as an individual champion, winning this event with a clearing height of 14-0 1/2. His next nearest competitor was Evan Franco of Carleton at 13-6 1/2.

As a team, Luther posted a point total of 102.5 points and finished fourth from the field of five teams. Gustavus won the team title with 159 points followed by Hamline University with 123.5.

One more meet remains before Luther will join the rest of the Iowa Conference for the 2009 Indoor Track and Field Championships that will be hosted by Wartburg College. This Saturday, Feb. 21, the Norse will travel to the University of Dubuque for an invitational that will begin at 10:00 a.m.
