Luther defeats simpson 1-0 in overtime
Oct. 10, 2009
Dani Meirick was in the right place at the right time as she knocked in the game winner 9:16 into overtime, giving Luther a 1-0 victory over Simpson College here in Decorah.
A Kelsey Balk shot that ricocheted off a Simpson defender, bounced in front of Meirick, who drove it past Simpson goalkeeper Megan Petersen. The goal was Meirick's tenth of the year.
The game winner was only fitting as the Norse dominated throughout the contest. The Norse out shot the Storm 27-9 and forced Petersen to make 12 saves.
Luther goalkeeper Hannah Wright was credited with three saves, including a point-blank shot early into the overtime period. The shutout was Wright's third of the year.
The win increased Luther's Iowa Conference record to 2-2-1, 5-6-1 overall. Simpson is now 2-2-0 in league play, 6-6-0 overall.
Luther will return to Iowa Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when it will travel to Storm Lake, Iowa to face Buena Vista University. This match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
