Luther Sweeps Concordia-Moorhead in Season Opener at Augsburg Dome

Nationally ranked #13 Luther kicked-off its 2009 campaign with a non-conference sweep over Concordia-Moorhead this afternoon. This twin bill was played on the campus of Augsburg College, who the Norse will play tomorrow, in the Augsburg Dome.
In game one, Luther exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, as the Norse defeated the Cobbers 8-0 in five innings. Doubles by Bre Twait and Jackie Miller, plus a single by Tiffany Kruse blew this game wide open early. Miller's double drove in three runs. The Cobbers also helped the Norse by committing two throwing errors.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kelsey Hake and Danielle Armbruster drove in Luther's final two runs with a double and single respectively.
BreAnn VanDeer went the distance in the circle, striking out seven of the 18 batters she faced, en route to her first shutout of the year.
In game two, Luther scored three runs in the second, one in the fifth and two in the sixth, posting a 6-2 victory in the night cap.
Freshman designated hitter Abby Christian drove in four runs thanks to a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. She hit her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot in the second and singled up the middle to drive in a run in the fifth.
Kim Lambert pitched six solid innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out eight. Ashlie Patten saw her first collegiate experience in the circle in the top of the seventh. Patten faced five batters and did not allow a hit.
Luther's double header with Augsburg will begin at noon tomorrow.
