Nine-run sixth propels Luther to victory over pacific university
March 24, 2009
In one of the most bizarre come-from-behind victories in school history, the nationally ranked #6 Norse scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 9-7 victory over Pacific University this afternoon in Tucson, Arizona.
Trailing 7-0 entering the sixth, lead-off hitter Danielle Armbruster, hit a first-pitch line drive that hit the Boxers starting pitcher Miranda McNealy. Following a 20-25 minute delay to assist the injured player and warm-up another pitcher, the Norse proceeded to score nine runs on seven hits. The Norse had 14 plate appearances in this inning and everyone in the lineup scored.
Anna Simonson, Kim Hess and Kelsey Hake all tallied two hits. Simonson, Tiffany Kruse and designated hitter Abby Christian all drove in two runs.
Kristie Wimmer, who took over the pitching duties in the top half of the sixth, was credited with her first collegiate win. Wimmer faced seven batters, walked one and did not allow a hit.
The win raised Luther's overall record to 8-1, Pacific fell to 12-6.
The Norse will return to action tomorrow with just one game on the schedule. The Norse will play Taylor University at 11:00 a.m.
